The Greatest Movies of the 00’s

I decided that I wanted to put a list together of my favourite movies of the last decade (2000 – 2009). I have been doing lists of my favourite films since 2004 and thought this would be a fun list put together. Of course in order to do this I needed to go back to the years I have not made a list for and come up with my favourite 10 films for those years. Here are the 10 ten lists from the years that I will consider for the top ten films of the decade:

So there you have the all the contenders that I will make my list from. Now there is important considerations I have made, if a series of films come together to make a full movie then the series will be considered as a whole.

Top Ten Films of The 00’s (2000 – 2009)

	10. Lost In Translation – I love the story of these two people meeting in this strange land at very different times in their lives, and the impact that they have on each other. Sofia Coppola paints a beautiful world and the acting from Johansson and Murray is some of their best ever.
	9. Rocky Balboa – I am a huge fan of the first 4 films, especially the first. I love the themes of this film “It’s not about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward”. I love how at the same time it mirrors the story 30 years ago and builds on it. The character has come so far, his convictions and values are so strong.
	8. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang – The glorious return of Robert Downy Jr., and what a fun return it is. This movie is such a fun smart and sexy ride. The writing and direction from Shane Black is incredibly sharp. And Michelle Monaghan and Val Kilmer also give amazing performances.
	7. The Dark Knight – I have always been a huge fan of batman and I feel that by the end of this film the character has finally become what I wanted him to be. The Cinematography of Gotham city is stunning, more films should be shot with IMAX cameras. I also love how chaotic the Joker can seem while at the same time he has everything going as planned.
	6. Punch-Drunk Love – I have referred to this movie as a musical superhero movie. Everything in this world has a beat and a rhythm, the movie moves like a piece of great classical music . And the power of love makes Adam Sandler feel like he has super powers, that he can conquer all obstacles.
	5. Kill Bill – (The Whole Bloody Affair) Instead of making this just some crazy revenge story, Quentin makes this a story of a women seeking justice. The plot is simple yet very powerful. I also helps that the action sequences are second to none, the house of blue leaves scene is legend.
	4. Garden State – A great love story. Its very rare to find someone that can write, direct and star in a movie and not have it turn out bad. But Zach Braff has done the impossible and has made a very good movie. The only other person I can think of that has done this is Orson Welles. (Also the soundtrack is very good)
	3. The Lord of The Rings – (the trilogy) What Peter Jackson set out to do seemed impossible, especially at the time where 3D was only just starting to get good. But what he accomplished was amazing. Not only did he capture the spirit of the novels but he was able to shape them in to truly epic movies. Yes things were changed from the book but in ways that complemented the material and made it work as a movie.
	2. There Will Be Blood – Here is a man who sets out to do great things, where every one around him benefits from his actions and yet he is hated. Paul Thomas Anderson has created a incredible movie that with the help of some amazing acting from Daniel Day-Lewis has captured what it must feel like to work so hard for your values only to have society, and even family, turn its back on you.
	1. Inglourious Basterds – After seeing ‘There Will Be Blood’ Quentin Tarantino decided he needed to up his game, and this was the result. A amazing triumph of film making. It brilliantly paints a picture of what the world ‘could be and ought to be’. Every facet of this movie excels, from the acting, writing, directing, soundtrack, to the hauntingly beautiful cinematography. When watching this I experianced both a very fun time (ex. seeing Hitler’s head shredded with bullets) and a deeper understanding of life like one does when studying great art (ex. Shosanna standing at the round window in the red dress with David Bowie’s Cat People playing).
